Muslim clerics gather for moon sighting in Cape Town during coronavirus lockdown

Muslim Clerics gathered at Three Anchor Bay in Cape Town for the sighting of the new moon which signals the start of the Islamic holy month of Ramadaan.

South Africa is under a national coronavirus lockdown until end of April to contain the spread of the virus. During the lockdown public gatherings are prohibited. A permit had to be granted for the gathering.

Moulana Abdul Khalid from the Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa announced that the new moon had not been sighted and therefore the month of Ramadaan in South Africa would start on Saturday 25 April.
