The art of being inconspicuous - adopting a blotchy pattern the colour of its surroundings, and that characteristic jerky movement, a mountain or coarse chameleon Chamaeleo (Trioceros) rudis carefully clambers over spiky Solanum leaves and twigs, while keeping an eye out for both predators and prey on the edge of Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. Note the opposing fingers - two against three, zygodactylous - and prehensile tail which ensures stability in a flexible, three-dimensional tangle. These small chameleons are a favourite prey for mountain buzzards, but are not harmed by their famous neighbours, the mountain gorillas - in fact curious young gorillas have been seen watching chameleons closely with evident fascination when they have come across one in the forest.
