Locals use COVID-19 relaxation time to dig path across mountain in northern India
Taking inspiration from Dashrath Manjhi- the 'Mountain Man' who had carved a road chipping down a hill using only a hammer and chisel in the state of Bihar- a group of men have been striving for the same in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand.
According to reports, male residents of Khadki village in Nainital district have converted a mountainous road into a motorable one, using shovels.
The video shows the men chipping away at the mountain and shovelling rocks while trying to pave a road.
They work relentlessly during the relaxation of the lockdown from 7 AM to 1 PM, instead of using this period to buy essential goods.
They work in unison, maintaining all prohibitory rules of the coronavirus pandemic, such as social distancing.
The distance of the Khadki road from the main street is 3 km, which they have prepared for the plying of two-wheeler vehicles.
According to villagers, the block chief gave an amount of six lakhs ($ 7,870) for this route, but the construction work was not completed.
The torrential landslides and loose mud have halted the construction work.
According to sources, the men have also widened the road for small vehicles to pass through.
The hard work of these men will benefit at least 40 families currently residing in the village.
