Tens of millions of olive ridley turtles have been hatching in recent days on the beaches of northeastern India.

Footage filmed on May 3rd showed hatchlings scurrying across the sand down to the waves at the mass nesting site of Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary in Kendarpara in Odisha state.

According to ecologists, about 20 million of the reptiles have already hatched from an estimated 60 million eggs laid.

Olive ridley turtles are the second smallest and most abundant of all sea turtles found in the world.

More than 1.5 crore of Olive Ridley sea turtles’ Hatchlings started emerging from the egg shells at the mass nesting site of Gahirmatha Marine sanctuary in Kendarpara .
In the ongoing lock down due to global pandemic ,something is to be cheered for the turtle lovers as more than one and half crore of endangered Olive ridley sea turtle hatchlings have begun emerging from the egg shells at the mass nesting sites of Nasi-2, marking the culmination of the annual rendezvous of these marine species since last 48 hours , informed Bikash Ranjan Dash,the DFO of Rajnagar Mangrove( forest )and wildlife division.
According to Dash, the DFO , while 84 lakhs of hatchlings emerged in last 24 hours ( from Sunday evening to Monday morning ), whereas 68.6 lakhs of hatchlings of Olive Ridley sea turtles came out from egg shells on last Saturday to Sunday morning at the tranquil sandy nesting ground at Nasi-2, under the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary . The babies broke out of the eggshells and wandered around the sandy beach for nearly an hour before making their way to swirling seawater.
According to local reports it is being said that the hatchlings emerged out of the eggs is the highest in a past decade .
