Madrid City Council has closed traffic to several streets in the capital with the aim of expanding the pedestrian space for relief walks and sports activities allowed in the descent of the confinement

In total, there are 29 streets that will be pedestrianized in the 21 districts of the city, either by section or completely, starting on Saturday, May 9. The closure to traffic in all of them will only be effective during weekends and holidays between 8:00 and 22:00. Similarly, the council lifts the veto to the parks, except in the largest in order to avoid crowds.

This was decided yesterday by the Government Board, with the Deputy Mayor, Begoña Villacís, who announced the measure. The consistory has indicated that, weekly, they will analyze the impact on mobility of the temporary pedestrianization of these streets, so that some sections could undergo changes. And there are roads where traffic is cut in both directions and in others only in one of them. In this way, Madrid expands the pedestrian space by a total of 19.5 kilometers and 235,000 m². A measure that comes after the first weekend in which they began to allow walks and individual sports activities (Saturday, May 2), crowds occurred in various parts of the capital, preventing keeping the security distance. To which was added that it was festive in the Madrid community.
