This is the moment a baby rhino born at a zoo in northern India attempts its first steps.

Video filmed at Patna zoo in northern Bihar province on Friday (May 8) shows the female baby rhino wobbling on its feed with mother Gauri keeping a watchful eye.

Rhinoceros are a critically endangered species with less than 30,000 rhino living in the wild today, according to helpingrhinos.org.. At the start of the 20th century, there were more than 500,000.

Amid the lockdown owing to COVID-19 pandemic, a baby rhino was born inside a zoo enclosure in northern India's Bihar.

The incident took place at the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, commonly known as the Patna zoo, on May 8.

The video shows the baby rhino wobbling on its feet, trying to stand by putting all its efforts, under the supervision of her mother Gauri.

The female baby rhino was born to Gauri (18) and Ayodhya (30) inside the enclosure.

A team of veterinary doctors, including five from Bihar Veterinary College, are closely monitoring the mother and the calf.

According to the officials, the mother will keep the calf close to her at a separate enclosure while the zookeepers will monitor the activities from a distance.

With a new member in the zoo family, the number of rhinos increased to 12, including six males, five females and a calf.
