African buffaloes, skimmers and elephants - cruising the Kazinga Channel, highlight of safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda.
One of the best #wildlife watching experiences in #Africa is an evening cruise along the #KazingaChannel in Queen Elizabeth National Park Uganda, #QENP. The channel connects Lake Edward to Lake George and its shores are frequented by flocks of water birds, reptiles and mammals coming to drink or wallow.
Thus, Video No.53 to #BrightenYourDay in the #Covid19 #lockdown, has more mammalian biomass than most, with a dozen #elephants and a herd of buffaloes (plus a few hippos, but they were submerged at this point). To add to the interest, a few of the buffalo were spooked a little as our boat drifted by and put up a flock of African skimmers Rynchops flavirostris - strange-looking birds whose lower mandible is longer than the upper, allowing them to skim the surface of the water in flight with beak open to catch fish.
The buffs quickly settled down to turn and watch us, forming an impressive wall of horns and muscle, with elephant family life playing out beyond; notice the elephant mother standing with left leg forward suckling her rather large baby, who curls his trunk up against her flank to drink from the breast with his mouth (it will be a long time before he masters the art of drinking with the trunk - at this stage baby elephants even drink water by sticking their face in the river). Young elephants are not fully weaned until 5 or 6 years of age, and don't reach maturity until their early teens, whereupon males gradually move away from their mother's influence, whereas females normally stay with their mother for life.
QENP features in the free vEco Tours VR app, for use with or without a #VR headset, and can also be visited virtually via www.vEcotourism.org
