Hungry elephants had a decent meal after going hungry due to the fall in tourists during the pandemic.

The jumbos were left out of work after the camp closed in Songkhla, southern Thailand, in March, in line with government restrictions.

Provincial authorities are now providing food for the animals while they wait for the industry to re-open.

Footage from from May 10 shows 12 jumbos enjoying 3.2 tonnes of food which was donated the the government and worried locals.

Provincial deputy governor Amphon Pongsuwan said the elephants are in need of help after the camp had to be closed during the state of emergency intended to stop the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.

He said: "The elephant camp has been temporarily closed under the state of emergency act, as have many tourist attractions.

"Here they have to take care of 12 elephants without any income for two months now and we worried about the well-being of the elephants so we provided them with food.

"The elephant is a precious animal of Thailand and I think it is the duty of every relevant authority to look after them, especially in this hard time."
