Fishermen rush back to shore as Typhoon Ambo makes landfall in the Philippines
Locals living in coastal villages scrambled for safety today (May 14) as Typhoon Ambo made landfall in the Philippines.
Footage from Sorsogon province at noon shows fishermen rushing back to the shore as the sea suddenly became rough.
The typhoon, with the international name Vongfong, made landfall over Eastern Samar at 12:15 pm bringing gusts of up to 180 km/h.
Footage from a resident's home in the San Policarpo municipality shows them sheltering in their porch as the typhoon rips through the street. Trees and parts of buildings were torn down.
The filmer, Rolly Tenoso, said: "The wind was really strong. Some of my neighbour's houses were damaged. I feel anxious because we haven't gotten over the coronavirus but we are facing another problem again."
Typhoon Ambo is the first typhoon to hit the country this year in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. Millions of locals are still reeling from the economic problems caused by the coronavirus . Many now face being evacuated into shelters amid fears the storm could inflict severe damage.
