Forest officials rescue ailing leopard near botanical garden in southern India

An ailing leopard was rescued by wildlife officials after locals found the distressed animal lying near a botanical garden in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

The incident took place near the government botanical garden in Ooty of Nilgiri district on May 16.

The video shows, the big cat struggling to move while trying to get on his legs.

The forest officials are seen rescuing the leopard with the help of net and taking it for treatment.

According to the reports, the forest officials were informed and the big cat was rescued. It was found to be in a poor health condition with an injury to its back leg and was being treated for the same.

Speaking to Newslions Media Network, District Forest Officer, Nilgiris Division, D Guruswamy said he is hopeful of the animal's recovery.

"The leopard is recovering. It is responding to medicines."

However, the DFO added the leopard will be kept under close watch for two days.

When asked about the reason behind the leopard's injury, Guruswamy said, "We could not ascertain the reason as of now."

It is believed the big cat was hit by a passing vehicle.
