India’s migrant workers continue to walk thousands of miles as they spill out of the big cities that have been shut down because of coronavirus and return to their villages.

According to local media, even as state governments are making arrangements for migrant workers to return home by trains, many are still walking, cycling, or traveling in transport vehicles, deemed unsafe and illegal.

The number of migrant workers killed on the roads in the last 54 days has reached 134. The majority of these deaths have occurred in the third phase of the lockdown that began on May 4.

As distressed migrant workers continue to walk to their native places in other states from several parts of the country amid the coronavirus Lockdown, there are regular reports of them meeting fatal accidents. The number of migrant workers killed on the roads in the last 54 days has reached 134. The majority of these deaths have occurred in the third phase of the lockdown that began on May 4.

The lockdown in India has impacted the livelihoods of a large proportion of the country’s nearly 40 million internal migrants. The repercussions of the Lockdown for low-skilled migrant laborers, and informal workers, have been devastating. Even today 100"s of migrant workers continued to travel by trucks while some are traveling on foot and bicycles to reach their respective homes 1000's km's away.
