Migrants workers demand transport, clash with cops, pelt stones in western India
A fierce clash broke out between migrant workers and police personnel after the former demanded they be sent back to their home towns, in the western Indian state of Gujrat.
The incident took place near a construction site in Ahmedabad on May 18.
Around 100 workers gathered near the construction site in Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad’s new campus in Vastrapur area while demanding wages, meals, and transport to return back to their native places.
Visuals showed the workers pelting stones near the campus.
The clash broke out after police rushed to the spot to quell the mob. As the police came to disperse the crowd, the group of migrant workers pelted stones at police and vandalized their two vehicles.
According to reports, two policemen were injured in the clash.
Police later lobbed teargas shells to disperse the rioters and detained at least 50 suspects.
On getting information about the incident, a large police force, including senior officers, rushed to the spot and controlled the situation.
Ever since the lockdown was imposed to combat the COVID-19, Gujarat has seen around a dozen incidents of violence between migrant workers and police personnel.
