Desperate farmers hit by drought are putting phalluses on a bridge to bring rain
Desperate farmers in Thailand have resorted to placing phallic sculptures on a bridge to ask for rain from the heavens to ease a drought.
Local farmers in Ang Thong province have been suffering from the dry conditions which have decimated their produce for more than a year.
They have now put the white and red phalluses on a bridge over a dried-out river as they believe t he lucky charms will bring them rain.
They are also saying prayers at the site to help with their bid for wet weather.
Veteran farmer Surapol Chuenniyom said this is the last resort as they desperately need rain for their crops.
He said: "Normally, there is a religious parade that we usually attend and pray for rain but that has been cancelled this year because of Covid-19.
"So we have to turned to this traditional rite which needs less contact among people.
"The traditional belief is that we must bring phallic sculptures and place them in an open space so the gods will see them and send rain for us.
"I don't know the origin of the folklore but we desperately needed water for our crops so we had to try.''
