Cyclone Amphan has caused destruction in eastern India's West Bengal, with at least 10 reportedly dead.

Video filmed in New Town, Kolkata on Wednesday (May 20) shows strong wind and rain sweeping through trees as Cyclone Amphan intensified.

Immediately after the landfall process began, cyclone Amphan caused massive destruction in eastern India's West Bengal.

The frightening visuals come out of Rajarhat New Town in Kolkata on May 20.

The video shows, strong winds followed by substantial rainfall sweeping through the trees as the tropical cyclone Amphan intensifies.

Kolkata and its satellite towns such as Salt Lake and New Town, faced the fiercest cyclone in decades, with winds that can reach up to 130 kilometres per hour (80 mph) around the city.

More than 5 thousand houses were damaged as the cyclone moved across the countryside and the cities.

Around three lakh people from low-lying and vulnerable areas have been evacuated.

The small bridges and electricity poles have been torn down.

Communication is completely snapped across the city.

In Kolkata, around 34 teams of rescuers are ready for emergency operations, including removing uprooted trees.

There are nearly 1.5-2 million slum dwellers and squatters in Kolkata, living in semi-pucca, brittle and temporary sheds.

They are most vulnerable to face the consequences of the super cyclone.

The extremely severe cyclonic storm has claimed the lives at least 10 people in the state.
