Dozens of firefighters fought a huge blaze at a scrapyard in Rochdale on Saturday evening (May 23).

Crews were called after the blaze broke out at the scrapyard on Corporation Road at around 7:15pm, local media said.

Eyewitness video smoke filling the air and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.

Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service tweeted earlier on Saturday evening: “Crews are currently at the scene of a scrapyard fire on Corporation Road in Rochdale. Roughly 35 firefighters from six stations were quickly on the scene and are tackling the blaze. There is smoke in the air so local people are asked to keep windows and doors closed.”

The fire involves approximately 30 vehicles within the yard.

"We anticipate being at this incident into the night," the service said.
