Despite the coronavirus pandemic, hundreds of religious Muslims flocked to this mosques in Padang City in West Sumatra Province of Indonesia today (May 24th) to celebrate Eid-al-Fitr which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Mosque staff asked the faithful to wash their hands at the door and took temperatures to prevent anyone with symptoms from entering.

However, footage filmed at the Quwwatul Ummah Mosque clearly showed that maintaining social distancing inside the building was impossible.

According to the mosque's management, the prayers were held at the request of residents and with the permission of local government.

According to Johns Hopkins University data at 7:50 GMT on May 24th, Indonesia recorded 21,745 cases of COVID-19 and 1,351 deaths.

Even in the midst of a corona virus pandemic, some Indonesian Muslim communities continue to carry out the Eid Al-Fitr 1441 Hijriyah Prayer. One of them is in the Quwwatul Ummah Mosque, Padang City, West Sumatra Province.
Since 7 o'clock in the morning, hundreds of people came to the mosque to perform the prayers which were held once a year. Residents also bring their children.
In anticipation of the spread of the corona virus, the mosque management provides a place to wash hands and measure the body temperature of each pilgrim who comes. Pilgrims with abnormal temperature are prohibited from participating.
In addition, participants of Eid prayer are also required to use a maxer and bring their own prayer rugs or prayer mat. The mosque's management also ensured that no one outside of their settlement residents took part.
According to the mosque's management, the prayer was performed at the request of residents, who had been permitted by the local government. The Purus Kebun resident admitted that he was brave to hold an Eid prayer in the middle of the pandemic, because their area had previously implemented health protocols, and forbade outsiders from entering the settlement and spraying disinfectant liquid.
In addition to the Purus Kebun area, Eid prayers also take place in a number of mosques in the city of Padang, such as in the Dadok Tunggul Hitam, Parak Gadang and Kuranji areas. Residents hope that the corona pandemic that has hit the city of Padang since the last two months, could end soon so they can worship and move as usual.
