Officials in eastern India's Odisha state have decided to conduct a novel coronavirus test on a female pangolin that was rescued from a quarantine facility.

The pangolin was rescued on May 25 from a centre in Cuttack district that housed 42 COVID-19 suspects.

The animal was rescued by a team of officials from the Athagarh forest division.

According to Divisional Forest Officer Sasmita Lenka, the pangolin was rescued after her team received information from a local leader.

Lenka said the officials decided to send the pangolin's swab for testing before releasing it in the wild.

Footage shows the endangered animal waddling around an office area, and later shows officials taking samples from the pangolin for testing.

The process was facilitated by Centre for Wildlife Health (CWH) at Odisha University of Agriculture & Technology in Bhubaneshwar.

The sample will be sent to a COVID-19 testing laboratory for evaluation.
