Views from the M5 Motorway and Dudley in the West Midlands, as rare noctilucent clouds are illuminated high up in the nights sky. The tenuous cloud-like phenomena only form in the upper atmosphere of Earth. Unlike lower clouds that are associated with weather, these clouds form very high, at about 85,300 meters (53 miles) above the Earth's surface, in the mesosphere. They are likely made of frozen water or ice crystals and are only visible during astronomical twilight. The word noctilucent roughly means ‘night shining’ in Latin. These are the highest clouds in Earth's atmosphere, often forming over 50 miles above ground level.
