Primates come in all shapes and sizes, from the gargantuan Grauer's Gorilla to the tiny Tarsier. Having often enjoyed the company of the former, it was my ambition for decades to see the latter... and yet each time I took a night walk in a #rainforest on occasional visits to #Borneo, I was unlucky. In 2015 while on a nocturnal stroll in Sepilok, Sabah, Malaysia​, my luck changed and this video is the result. It is No.76 in the #BrightenYourDay series to bring #nature into your #Covid19 #lockdown.
The taxonomy of tarsiers is challenging - there used to be a single genus, Tarsius, and the Western or Horsfield's #Tarsier found in Borneo was known as Tarsius bancanus. In 2010, the late great Colin Groves and Myron Shekelle​ proposed a three-genus classification which names the Borneo sub-species Cephalopachus bancanus borneanus. Whichever name we use, it was a thrill to find one so obliging as to allow a close look at their extraordinary anatomy - huge eyes, bat-like ears, fingers like a tree-frog and a naked tail with a bottle-brush at the tip - and then to demonstrate their famous vertical-clinging and leaping mode of travel.
