Timelapse video shows local citizens in Indonesia's North Sumatra scavenging items for recycling from a mountain of garbage at a landfill site.

The video was captured on June 2 in Medan Marelan district.

At the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos earlier this year, Indonesian officials pledged to cut marine plastic debris by 70 percent within the next five years and by 2040 aim to achieve a plastic pollution-free country.

Today (Friday) is World Environment Day.

Every year, World Environment Day is celebrated every June 5, this commemoration invites the world community to be more concerned about the environment. This year, the big theme raised is to focus on biodiversity to combat the degradation of species in the surrounding environment.
