Thai sex worker reveals devastating impact of coronavirus on her business
A Thai s e x worker discusses the impact that the coronavirus restrictions have had on her brothel.
Nong Gift, assistant manager and also one of the prostitutes at 'Dream Heaven Massage' in Bangkok, said the venue has received 'no income' since it was forced to close in March due to Covid-19.
The Thai government closed all massage and entertainment clubs in March when coronavirus started to escalate worldwide. Although the country has started to ease lockdown measures, brothels and bars remain closed due to the close contact involved in their work.
''All the expenses still need to be paid,'' said Nong Gift. ''But how can we with no income?''
The business has struggled to pay the rent, utilities bills and other costs to officials. Some of the prostitutes have stayed at the shop, sleeping in the rooms while ''others have gone home''.
Nong Gift said that even if the business is allowed to re-open in the coming weeks, they could still face an uncertain future without any foreign tourists visiting.
Currently, Thailand has banned all tourist arrivals and even residents arriving back on repatriation flights are forced into state-controlled 14-day quarantine.
The strict measures are likely to continue until the Covid-19 pandemic has passed, forcing many nightlife establishment's like Nong Gift's out of business.
