Hundreds line an Ilkeston road in Derbyshire to honor the memory of 97 year old WW2 veteran Peter Watkins. The bridge too far hero was given a full guard of honor despite current coronavirus restrictions on funerals. The retired stanton Ironworker was among just 50 soldiers in his battalion to survive the 1944 bloodbath. When the war broke out, Mr Watkins was a steel worker in Wales. Despite his role being a protected occupation he volunteered with the Welsh Regiment before transferring to the Parachute Regiment.

He served in Africa, Italy and India and at Arnhem. 76 year after his bravery left Hitler reeling Peter Watkins lost his life to coronavirus at the age of 97.

He died after contracting coronavirus at his care home in Ilkeston.
