Dolphin watching at dawn off Lovina Beach, north coast of Bali, Indonesia.

Dolphins are wonderful. Wherever there is a reasonable chance of seeing them, there are usually boats offering #dolphinwatching cruises. On the north coast of #Bali, #Indonesia, the experience brings you very close to the large pods of dolphins because the vessels used are mostly double-outrigger canoes. Visitors are just above the waves and the #dolphins are often swimming around and between the flotilla of canoes and motor-boats. I was a bit concerned at what impact the boats had on the dolphins, but it seemed we were largely irrelevant to them unless they chose to approach the boats playfully. Sometimes there were dozens in view - including mothers with young doing synchronised swimming together. Their speed was so impressive and while it was difficult to know where to point the camera, some of the behaviour I filmed forms today's #BrightenYourDay video, No.88 in the series to lift spirits during the #Covid10 #lockdown.
Sadly, when you search the internet to find out about dolphins off Bali, as well as the opportunity to watch them in the wild, you will see adverts for 'swim with dolphins' experiences in captivity, a profitable business that drives the capture of these amazing intelligent beings for a life of servitude, silly tricks and social and sensory deprivation. A few are rescued - for more info about a pioneering dolphin sanctuary in Bali at Dolphin Project, see https://www.dolphinproject.com/
