A police helicopter was seen flying over Massey, west Auckland, New Zealand on Friday (June 19) after a police officer was shot dead and another seriously injured during a routine traffic stop.

The suspect is still at large and armed officers are at the scene.

A police officer has died after two were shot and another person was hit by a fleeing car in West Auckland, Stuff understands.

Superintendent Naila Hassan, Waitematā District Commander, said the two officers were seriously injured after being shot at during a routine traffic stop on Reynella Dr, in Massey, about 10.30am on Friday.

A member of the public was also injured after being hit by a vehicle fleeing the scene.

Eric Lew said the normally quiet neighbourhood has been shaken by the incident.
Stuff understands the two officers suffered gun shot wounds to the abdomen and were taken to Auckland City Hospital, where one has since died.

A police spokesman couldn't confirm what weapon was used but confirmed the offender "open fired on our staff".

Police have a large presence actively searching for the offender, who remains at large. It's understood the offender has changed vehicle.

Resident Justin Nicholas said he heard five or six gun shots in quick succession before he saw police storming up the road shortly after.

“It was pretty scary.”

Armed police are at the scene after the offender fled the scene.

Eric Lew, who lives nearby told TVNZ, he heard a noise and "bang, bang, bang three times" before he saw police and ambulances.
