Doctors in Coimbatore in southern India managed to save the life of a seven-year-old boy after he met with a horrible accident.

Ritikeshwaran, a third standard student, was playing by himself on June 16, as his school had been closed due to the COVID-19 virus scare.

The boy wanted to play with a swing and climbed a tree near his home carrying an iron hook to set it up.

But a branch broke under his weight and he fell down along with the two-foot-long hook, which pierced his throat and came out his right ear.

His parents immediately took the grievously injured boy in an ambulance to a nearby hospital in Tirupur, which gave him first aid, and referred him to the Government Hospital in Coimbatore.

Ritikeshwaran was admitted to the paediatric surgery unit where doctors performed several tests, including a CT scan, and found that the 12-millimetre-wide and 2-feet-long hook had missed his vital organs.

A team of seven doctors led by Dr. Rangarajan, Department of Pediatric Surgery, operated on him for nearly an hour and removed the hook.

Kalidas, Dean of the hospital, congratulated the team and said the boy was in good condition and would make full recovery.
