Angry residents respond to illegal property demolition in South Africa
Angered residents of Hagberg in Cape Town, South Africa took to the streets after a large group of law enforcement and municipal police destroyed the dwelling of a family on Friday (June 19).
The dwelling according to the City of Cape Town has been erected illegally. Demolition continued despite a hold being placed on evictions during the COVID-19 lockdown. By law, a court order or eviction notice is required for any property to be demolished
Residents report that municipal police acted vulgar toward females and fired teargas into the community.
After the municipal police retreated, the South African National Defence force accompanied the South African police service to stabilize the area.
