Hemet Fire Department responded to a residential fire in the 1200 block of West Johnston ave. Hemet police officers rushed to the scene moments after the initial call due to reports of a woman possibly being trapped inside the residence. Officers were able to rescue the resident who did not sustain any injuries in the fire. Smoke and a small header was showing from the roof and the backyard area of the home. Firefighters initiated an attack but stopped when multiple gas leaks were noticed. Firefighters began locating the source of the gas leak and found them at at least two separate other residential properties nearby at 1135 Santa Maria Dr and 1150 Vista Grande Dr. At both locations firefighters noticed the gas lines on fire. The cause may have been due to improper electrical repairs near the gas lines. The electrical wires were found to be wrapped and taped around one the lines. Edison and the gas company arrived and secured the meters. This caused a power surge in the area that knocked out electricity to multiple city blocks as well as being possibly the cause of the fire on Johnston Ave. It's unknown how long it will be before power and gas are restored.
