"You wanna get hurt by some spray paint? Why don't you get hurt by the last 400 years, bro." - Black Lives Matter Activist Grace Harrison speaks out at London rally
As thousands of demonstrators march in London to protest racial inequality, Grace Harrison stands beside the now-uncovered statue of Winston Churchill, which has become a symbol of the UK's colonial past and was recently covered up after being defaced with graffiti. Grace criticises the government's decision to protect the statue when so many black people throughout history have not been granted protection from racism. The statue has been seen protected by a ring of police during protests, and was briefly covered with a metal casing after it was defaced during protest clashes with far-right activists.
FULL TRANSCRIPT:
A box was up on Churchill because them guys wanna come here to protect a statue that is already protected. Let me repeat myself. They came here last week to protect a statue that is already protected. By the mother-f*cking- sorry for the kids that are here and my french - by the mother-f*cking government, because they'd rather put their money in a mother-f*cking cardboard box, metal box, whatever it is, protect a statue, for a man that aint even here right now, but we're all here right ourselves. And they don't wanna put the money into us to protect us. There was a video out by Tommy Robinson - the blad clat - I don't care what you guys say, arrest me for saying and I wanna say it, because the guy's a blad clat. And you all wanna be up here, yeah, what, oh, these people, blah blah blah, Tony Robinson, educate yourself, yeah? Educate yourself on our ancestors. Educate yourself on that past 200, 100, 10, 20 to present day years. We aint here for a statue. What's this piece of metal got to do with us? Please sorry sir, can you talk? Nah, I didn't think so. He lived in a time where it was so corrupted. Where he had to do what he had to do. And he decided to be on the wrong side, even though he was on the right side in certain problems. Okay? Let me make that very clear. He was on the wrong side, but on the right side on certain problems. Let me tell you now, those certain problems where he's on the right side is only what we're told by the media because we have to research ourselves as to what he was on the wrong side. They would only make it clear so they can chuck back in our faces, oh, but the Windrush - who let you come over on the Windrush? Oh, okay. What about all my brothers and sisters in Africa? What about all my brothers and sisters in Jamaica, he left over there to die and be influences and manipulated by the power there. Spray paint, what you wanna get hurt by some spray paint? Why don't you get hurt by the last 400 years, bro? Spray paint that's not even there any more. You can't even tell that it was there. Spray paint? Are you telling me you're hurt by some mother f*cking ink? That can be scrubbed off by our tax paying money? By our tax-paying money. It's scrubbed off with ink in less than two hours but we've had to live, from our ancestors until this day, through school, through college, university, being declined by this, being declined by that, not being accepted, being pulled over, being given x y and z, just because of our skin colour. But oh, I'm sorry that you'll get offended by some spray paint that will get, you know, removed by your tax paying money every single mother f*cking year. I'm sorry if that offends you. But you know what, I'm sorry that you don't understand, I'm sorry that you don't understand our frustration, I'm sorry you don't understand why we're here. I'm sorry that you don't understand why your brothers and sisters are fighting with our brothers and sisters. But you wanna know why? Because on the right side of history, we all understand that we stand as one. That's all I gotta say.
