Indonesian officials on Monday (June 22) released a Sumatran tiger into Gunung Leuser National Park, northern Sumatra.

Workers at the Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Centre set the tiger free after it was evacuated and rehabilitated for several months.

Footage shows the tiger, named Ida, leave the cage immediately as the door opens.

Ida was evacuated from East Trumon in Aceh after several incidents happened with locals.

After being evacuated, the tiger was temporarily placed under observation at the Conservation Response Unit (CRU) in Trumon observation before being released.

The team from the Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Center, Indonesia, successfully released a Sumatran Tiger named Ida in the Gunung Leuser National Park area, Monday, June 22, 2020.

The selection of the Gunung Leuser National Park location as a tiger release location after a study and survey of the feasibility of carrying capacity of habitats together with partners which included studies of populations, availability of food, and habitat threats.

Release activities run smoothly and in accordance with the stages of the planned activities.

In the release process, the tiger showed its wild nature which was very reactive, this was seen when the cage door was opened Ida immediately ran away into the Gunung Leuser National Park area.

This female tiger before being released, it was evacuated from Ie Dalim Hamlet, Jambo Dalem Village, East Trumon District, South Aceh District.

This tiger was evacuated because of frequent conflicts with the humans in Kapa Seusak Village and Jambo Dalem Village, East Trumon District, which occurred since the end of March 2020.

After being evacuated, the tiger was placed temporarily in the Trumon CRU for observation and health checks. During the observation period this tiger showed very good conditions.

This is also strengthened by the results of examining the first and second blood samples in the laboratory.

Based on the results of the health screening the medical team recommends that the tiger is fit to be released into its habitat in the forest.
