Invasive Turtles Take Over Welsh Lake

Buy video

Whilst on a walk around his local lake wildlife photographer Ewan Wilson spotted something very strange, wild fresh water turtles. Although these reptiles where native to the uk, they went extinct 8,000 years ago. They have returned due to the intensive demand from the pet trade.

Although these animals are very cute, they are also ravenous predators. They will eat everything from small to medium sized fish, small birds and even other turtles. They can grow surprisingly large and are hard to take care of, so people must of released them into the UK's waterways.

8,000 years of absence means that our wildlife has gotten used to not having these morbidly adorable water predators around and have not needed to adapt to there presents. The turtles returning to our waterways could possibly be damaging to our now naive birds, reptiles and other wildlife. Wildlife sanctuaries are working to capture these turtles and take care of them, so that they can live happy and educate the public about these reptilian invaders!
