Sumatran orangutan has difficulty finding food in native Indonesian habitat
A Sumatran orangutan is seen in the forest area of Danau Lau Kawar in the Karo District of North Sumatra, Indonesia on June 24.
According to local media, it's been almost a month since the orangutan was spotted on the forest edge, with suspicion it was targeting food close to residential areas.
The animal is predicted to be male and around 20 years old.
According to the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), the Sumatran orangutan is classified as a rare animal and close to extinction, with a population of 13,000 left in Indonesia.
The Head of Region 1 at the North Sumatra Center for Nature Conservation (BBKSDA), Tuahman Tarigan said, "We appeal to the local community. What kind of food is suitable, so if we give it to orangutans, can it be detrimental to their health or vice versa? Can it become food dependence from outside."
