A non-violent protest was held outside South Africa's Parliament in Cape Town on Tuesday (June 30) to highlight the scourge of gender-based violence sweeping the country.

Earlier this month, South Africa's president noted that the recent surge in violence against women happened after the country eased its lockdown.

Dozens of women have been raped and killed in recent weeks as South Africa lowered its lockdown alert levels. During level 5 other violent crimes had significantly decreased while incidents of gender based violence spiked.
