A lucky escape! Snoozing Leopard becomes alert as Impalas approach – then cancels the hunt

Leopards (Panthera pardus) are superb hunters, but must remain concealed until they are close enough to charge and bring down their prey. This male Leopard was dozing on top of a large boulder in the shade of a Jackalberry Tree (Diospyros mespiliformis) in the southern region of Kruger National Park in South Africa. He remained quiet and still for over half an hour until a herd of Impalas (Aepyceros melampus), the commonest medium-sized antelope in Kruger, arrived and stayed in the shade, oblivious to his presence. The Leopard suddenly roused, and positioned himself as if he was going to hunt. However, he seemed to decide that the Impalas were too far away, so he relaxed again, hiding once more in the shade of the Jackalberry.
