This is the shocking moment runner was headbutted by a cow during a cattle race in Indonesia on June 28.

The man, who is part of the opponent team, was seen running ahead of a cow before it caught up to him and rode him down.

A rider desperately tried to steer the beast away from the runner but it knocked him down then trampled over him.

The competition committee acted swiftly and evacuated victims to the hospital in on Madura Island, East Java Province.The victim survived the ordeal but he suffered a broken back and arm.

Witness Mas Bimbo said: "The victim was a member of one of the teams. It looked painful but his injuries were not too serious. Running with the cows is just part of the atmosphere.''

Locally called "Karapan Sapi," cow racing is a unique tradition of the people on the island.

The tradition sees residents ride the animals annually to show gratitude to the Gods for the fertility of their land.
