Amazing footage shows a monarch caterpillar shedding its skin before enclosing itself in silk chrysalis.

Insect enthusiast Todd Clough said he found the caterpillar in his garden and took it carefully into his house, where he ensured its survival.

He made a plastic bottle shelter for it to stay before a butterfly is born, along with the other chrysalis he found in his yard in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on June 23.

He said: "This was a very cold and rainy spring, so they were delayed in migrating here. I have about 20 caterpillars in total so far."

Monarch butterfly spring season migration happens between the months of March and June.
