A security camera in the Indian capital has captured the horrifying moment an off-duty police officer hit a female pedestrian in his car and then ran her over as he was attempting to flee.

The disturbing scene took place on July 3rd.

The footage shows the hatchback hit the woman, knocking her to the ground.

As passers-by surround her to help her to her feet, the driver now runs her over and flees the scene.

The driver has been identified as a 56-year-old Delhi Police sub-inspector and has been arrested.

The woman, described as "elderly", was badly injured in the incident and is still undergoing treatment.

Disturbing CCTV footage shows a speeding car with the woman on its bonnet. The woman falls off the hatchback as it comes to a halt in a narrow lane.

Just as passers-by runs to the woman's rescue and try to lift her from the road, the driver starts the car again, runs over the woman, and drives straight ahead.The car speeds away even as a few men can be seen trying to stop it. The woman is seeing lying in on the road.

The driver, who has been identified as a 56-year-old Delhi Police sub-inspector, has been arrested.

The elderly woman from Chilla Village has been badly injured in the incidents and undergoing treatment.
