Cute Vervet Monkeys grooming each other
Vervet Monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) are widespread in southern and eastern Africa, and family groups are often closely associated with humans in game parks, on farms and in urban areas. In game parks, agricultural areas and in suburbs Vervets become pests, raiding vehicles, fridges and crops for food. Vervets are mostly herbivorous, but they also take insects and the eggs and chicks of some birds. This family of Vervets lives in the Pretoriuskop Restcamp in Kruger National Park. They had just finished patrolling the camp in search of food, then paused at a chalet to relax and groom each other. In the tree above them a spectacular Purple-crested Turaco (or Lourie, Tauraco porphyreolophus) was calling. Vervets have separate male and female dominance hierarchies – at the end of this sequence the dominant female is grooming the dominant male.
