Gorgeous bird! A stunning male Southern Red Bishop defending his territory

Buy video

The tiny, bright red and black breeding male Southern Red Bishop (Euplectes orix), is one of the world’s most stunning birds, while the female has drab brown plumage. Male Southern Red Bishops build several nests, usually in reeds near water or in rank grass, mate with several females if they can. They perform display flights with their feathers fluffed up, and actively drive rival males away. This male was defending his nests amongst the reeds at the edge of the causeway over the Sabie River in the southern part of Kruger National Park, South Africa. He perched on a reed, looking around. When he spotted a female or a rival male he flew off in pursuit.
