Young people in a city in Indonesia have designed an innovative plastic recycling plant to turn waste in their community into diesel.

Located on the border area between Padang City and Painan City in the South Coast District, Koto Xi Subdistrict, families in the area use special sacks for plastic waste to be delivered to the plant.

At this plastic waste processing site, plastic waste is processed into fuel by burning using special tools obtained from the Indonesian Rainforest Foundation.

Sira Ismail, coordinator of the Nagari River Pinang plastic waste management site, stated in an interview:
"This machine is used to process waste made from plastic. You do this by heating or burning.The combustion process takes almost three hours, and can produce two litres of fuel from seven kilograms of waste. This type of fuel contains 80% diesel and 20% gasoline.

"This process has only been running for a month. We buy a sack, then give it to the community, so they can collect the plastic home waste into the sack. In one month we can reduce the process of 80 kg of plastic waste. The hope is that in the future the community will no longer pollute nature with plastic waste."

The fuel processed from the plastic waste is given to the local inn to support the sustainability of tourism in this area. The existence of the plant is welcomed by the community.

"We have a shop. Plastic waste from this merchandise we collect in the sacks that have been given. There is also household rubbish, plastic chilli rubbish, cooking oil. Plastic waste that is collected and then we give it to the garbage bank for later recycling. With the existence of a garbage bank, our village has become clean from garbage."
