Heavy rain caused flash floods which submerged a highway in Chiang Rai, northern Thailand, this morning (July 8).

Authorities were battling to clear the debris and floodwater from the road, the main connecting highway to neighbouring cities.

Homes along the road were also flooded, with residents having to be evacuated to nearby shelters.

The northern region of Thailand is expected to suffer more rainstorms in the upcoming week due to monsoons moving across the Gulf of Thailand.

Thailand's rainy season lasts from May to late September. There are regular thunderstorms and heavy rain, which often leads to flash floods as the country's underdeveloped infrastructure struggles to cope with the deluge.
