A YouTuber from northwestern India has made an electric bicycle for less than 200 US dollars which can travel 40 kilometres on a single charge.

Partha Saha from the Agartala area in the state of Tripura used his savings to buy a battery and a motor and then converted his pushbike himself.

The total project cost 4000 India rupees or 186 US dollars.

"The bicycle has been created with environmental preservation in mind. These products help us conserve energy and precious natural resources while also helping to curb pollution," Saha said.

In the future, Saha hopes to install a horn and a light to help him ride the bike at night.

Amid a time when environmental pollution has grown into a global transboundary problem, a YouTuber from northeastern India's Tripura has made a unique electric motorcycle to create awareness among people.

The visual came out of Aralia village near Agartala on July 7.

Partha Saha has used up his meagre savings to covert a normal cycle to an electric-powered bike that can drive 40 km (24 miles) in a single charge.

Built over six days, the bicycle is powered by a 24 Volt-30 Ampere battery and run by 300 Watt brushless DC motor.

"This is a school project, that can inspire students to go for a green environment. The motor used in this product is carbonless and it is made by a Pune-based Indian company," he told Newslions.

"Previously all my projects had used China-made components, however, in this electric bicycle, every component used is made in India," he added.

The video shows a child getting on the bike and riding it smoothly on the road.

The foot pedals have been replaced by a motor inside the bike connected to the wheels with the help of a chain.

All the components have been fitted inside a box placed on the rear carrier of the bicycle.

The total project was priced at 4000 INR (186 US Dollars).

"The bicycle has been created with environmental preservation in mind. These products help us conserve energy and precious natural resources while also helping to curb pollution. Given the extreme pollution, we have been creating using petrol or diesel-operated vehicles, we must look for better alternatives." Saha said.

In future, Saha hopes to install a horn and a light to help him navigate the bike in the darkness.

Previously, Saha had devised a 'social distancing' motorcycle, keeping up with guidelines issued by the World Health Organisation amid the coronavirus pandemic.
