A monarch caterpillar's transformation into a chrysalis was captured through timelapse footage.

Footage shows the insect shed its outer layer over the course of a few hours transforming it into a chrysalis, also known as a pupa.

The caterpillar will stay in chrysalis for five to 21 days and will develop into a fully-fledged monarch butterfly.

The filmer, Dan Goulet, told Newsflare: "I have been raising monarch butterfly caterpillars that I found on my milkweed plant.

"I managed to capture this timelapse video of the transformation from caterpillar to chrysalis after hours of intense watching and waiting."

The footage was filmed in Winnipeg, Canada on July 14.
