This is the heartbreaking moment a grieving mother monkey tried to help its partner after she was struck by a car.

The female long-tailed monkey was left dying in the road by the cruel driver that hit it in Lembang town of Indonesia's West Bandung Regency on July 15.

In the video, a panic-stricken male monkey from the same troop was seen tending to his injured mate.

The primate hovered around the body while trying to drag it with him to the roadside but several passing cars repeatedly startled him.

Several other monkeys started appearing from the trees a few moments later, watching their friend lying in the middle of the road.

The primates eventually dragged the dead member of the troop onto the pavement but she was already dead.

Tedi Kurniawan Mochamad, who lives nearby, said: "We wanted to help but we are concerned about the other monkeys. They are a large group.

"Some of my neighbours tried helping but they were chased away by the monkeys."

The dead monkey was eventually evacuated from the road after a few hours. The body was buried in woodland in nearby the village.
