Schoolgirls wade through raging river gushing into the sea during Indonesia floods
This is the dangerous moment four school girls bravely helped each other cross a raging river during floods in Indonesia.
The girls in school uniforms crossed the Ulil river in Maluku province where it flows into the sea - with one wrong move meaning they could be washed miles from the shore.
Footage shows how they waded through the torrent one-by-one, each time returning to help the other person.
They were accompanied by their teacher walking along the beach on their way home to ensure their safety after the storm caused the river to swell on July 16. The region has been battered by monsoon rains causing flash floods.
Teacher Lissa Tanamal said: ''After three hours of waiting, we finally made it. These kids are braver than me.''
One of the group managed to cross the river first and returned for her friends after putting her bag in a safe place.
Another of the students fell and almost drifted away but she was able to stand and reach the other side.
Teacher Werto Wailissahalong said the girls are used to crossing the river but it is still dangerous for them.
He said: "They are my students. They walk along the beach and have to cross the river if they want to go to school.
"They have to cross the river to reach schools in Batuasa Village. They are from Tobo Village."
The girls had to walk at least three kilometres everyday and cross the river to come to school.
Unlike other provinces, school activities in the Eastern District of Seram have resumed since July 13 amid the pandemic.
