In an extraordinary incident, a woman gave birth to a baby girl on-board a rescue boat while being evacuated from the flood-hit northern India state of Bihar.

The delivery took place on July 26 in East Champaran aboard a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescue boat.

According to reports, an NDRF team was on a rescue operation in areas hit by Burhi Gandak river, when they were informed about 25-year-old Rima Devi, resident of Gobari village, who was in an advanced stage of her pregnancy.

They rushed to evacuate her to the Primary Health Centre in Banjariya before she developed severe labour pains during the course of the operation.

The woman then delivered a baby girl on the boat under the supervision of rescuers from the force and a social worker.

Visuals show Rima with her baby girl in her lap, after having successfully delivered her, while the NDRF personnel use handheld fans to relieve the brave woman.

According to reports, a total of 21 NDRF teams are deployed in 12 districts of Bihar to tackle the flood situation affecting over a million people in the state.
