In Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu’s well-known hill-resort, gaurs are sometimes known to saunter casually through the town, heedless of traffic and awestruck pedestrians. However, in neighbouring Munnar — some 40 km away as the crow flies — gaurs prefer to stick to their natural habitat, sprawling grassland pastures that fringe the jungle. Whereas in Kodaikannal Indian gaurs roaming in town has become frequent. It pose a big threat to the tourists and the local people who are living over there. But locals say that the Gaurs often pay a visit to town in search of food and water.
The mighty gaurs is simultaneously threatening and endangered. Forest department should ensure that these wild beasts would get sufficient water and food inside the forest itself and thus we can ensure a safe distance from these gigantic gaurs.
