In Kruger National Park in South Africa, a large bull elephant is so sleepy that he ends up in a neck-wrenching position by sleeping against a tree while standing up on July 27.

I was alone on a self-drive safari in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. I decided to stop at the first waterhole I came across on my route. There were a small number of elephants in the area making their way to the water. While scanning my surroundings I noticed one elephant standing in awkward position with its head leaning upwards against a tree trunk. I decided to drive closer and see what was going on. On closer inspection, I come to realize that it was a large old elephant bull actually taking a nap. Being the largest mammal on the planet, many safari goers always want to know how do elephants sleep and if they actually can sleep. For younger elephants it is easy to lie down on their side and sleep as they can get back onto their feet. Bigger elephants like this male can not lie down and have to rely on innovative methods such as leaning against a steep slope or mound while others like this bull, prefer to rest their almost four-hundred-kilogram head in an awkward position against a tree trunk. The big bull elephant surprisingly looked comfortable with his position until he slowly started sliding down the tree trunk with his mouth starting to hang open. The bull elephant slowly re positioned his head back up again and continued with his late morning nap.
