Following the refusal by the Hong Kong government to enter into discussion to stop the move for extradition to China, Hong Kongers flooded the streets. In what is believed to be the largest ever march by Hong Kongers, numbers are estimated to be 2 million protesters with people taking over 8 hours to pass the finishing point.
On the 9th June 2019 over 1 million protesters marched the same route clad in white. For this march, one week later, the protesters dressed in black. The protest movement in Hong Kong then became associated with the black-clad protesters.
The protest movement escalated for over a year causing the Chinese central government to step in and introduce the National Security law at 11pm 30th June 2020. The NSL is seen as the end of the "One country two systems" government promised to Hong Kong during the Sino-British talks that lead to the handover of the British colony back to the motherland of the Peoples Republic of China.
