In a shocking incident, locals of a village in central India's Madhya Pradesh resorted to moral policing and meted out a draconian punishment to a married woman who allegedly eloped with her lover.

The incident took place in Chapri Ranvas village of Jhabua district on July 28.

Visuals showed locals, armed with sticks, ordering the woman to bent down and allow a man- identified as the husband- to sit on her shoulders. The woman is then forced to carry the man as locals parade her.

After a while, she stops as he alights, however, the angry locals make her do it again.

According to reports, the punishment was meted out by a Kangaroo Court, who decided the best way to treat her was to force her to carry her husband.

Taking cognizance of the crime, police have registered a case against those who meted out the punishment.
