Dramatic footage shows the moment a zebra managed to wriggle free from the jaws of a crocodile while crossing a river in southern Kenya.

As a herd of zebra cross the Mara River, near the Masai Mara National Reserve, one is hunted down by and struggles to move as the reptile clamps down on its leg.

As the pair reach the riverbank, the zebra managed to escape and it hobbles out of the water as a couple of other zebras take a risky drink from the 395 kilometre river.

The filmer told Newsflare: "This video shows a zebra attacked by a big croc holding it by a leg and trying to drown it. The zebra fights and manages to go close to the shore with the croc still on its leg."

This encounter was filmed on July 22.
